Client's Question: Can You Paint Kitchen Cupboards?

When our clients in Horsham approached us, they were wondering, “Can you paint kitchen cupboards to completely change their look without a full kitchen fit out?” They loved the layout of their kitchen but felt the dark oak cupboards and black granite worktop made the space feel outdated and heavy. They were looking for a cost-effective solution to lighten up the kitchen while maintaining its existing structure.

The Solution: Painting The Kitchen Cupboards and Worktop

We reassured them that you can paint kitchen cupboards and achieve a professional, durable finish with suitable systems and processes. Our proposed solution was a two-part transformation:

Cabinets: Sprayed in Farrow & Ball Stiffkey Blue, a deep, elegant blue that adds character without overwhelming the space. Taking an existing oak or wood kitchen to a painted finish is easily done with the right products. It can have a dramatic impact on the look of the kitchen.

If you look through some of our past projects, you will see quite a few kitchens we have done that have gone from oak to a painted finish. There are some great colour examples to give you an idea of how good they look. Whether you go bold with a dark blue or bright with white or an off-white, the choice is up to you.

Worktop: Painted worktops are a newer concept in the UK, but in the USA, they have been painting them for years. It’s all about the primers and the process. This worktop was primed and then sprayed with Oyster Bay Stoneflecks from HawkLabs. This finish gives a soft, speckled granite effect, bringing a modern touch to the existing black granite surface.

The Result

The transformation was remarkable. Painting the kitchen cupboards in Stiffkey Blue and updating the worktop with a light stone effect made the kitchen look brighter and more contemporary. The space now feels spacious, sophisticated, and welcoming, perfectly matching the client’s vision.
